In 1990 I was discharged from the Army from an overseas Pacific location (Korea). All discharges from the pacific happened at the Presidio, San Francisco. The army holds you for three or four days then hands you a check for bus travel to your home of record and you walk out the gate and say goodbye! My younger brother, Mike, picked me up at the base and hauled me to where he lived in Davis, CA. Whew, step one over. Now I needed to find a way to get from there to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to go back to school. In steps this dude who sells me this little car. I think I paid about 1200.00 for it.
I drove this neat little vehicle from Davis, CA to Lincoln, Nebraska where my younger sister lived. It broke down in Winnemucca, Nevada I had no tools in those days so I took it to a garage for repair. One alternator and an overnight hotel stay later and off we went. I stopped and checked out the salt flats in Utah and the great Salt Lake. I'll Never forget the scene in Salt Lake City seeing the mountains growing behind the city skyline, breathtaking. Made it to lincoln and partied with my sister, cheryl, for a few days.
From Lincoln, Headed south to Dallas, Texas to see my Aunt Debbie and stayed with her family for a couple days. From Dallas headed across to Tuscaloosa. Set up a mailbox, Rented an apartment, and headed out again to Anniston, Alabama to see my family there. In anniston I stayed with my grandmother, Annie Mae Scruggs. Left granny's house and went to Atlanta where I picked up Janelle. She flew into Atlanta from Korea 3 weeks behind me. We went back to Granny's house after an overnight hotel stay (she really needed the rest). Granny and Janelle got along really well. I think they really loved each other.
We kept the Champ another 3 or four months, Janelle learned how to drive in it.
